At the indoor range by us, you can recover your own brass as long as it isn't past the line into the actual range. If your brass goes there, you just lost it. My sons M1 30-06 spits the case forward about 95% of the time (weird), so almost all of that expensive 30-06 brass would be lost. Even if he never plans to reload (he's considering it), he can collect his brass and take it to the recycle center along with the aluminum cans and get paid for it.
