No actually I have never seen a ball joint come apart on one of these rigs leaving you stranded I have replaced some super worn out metal on metal about to come apart ball joints, but never a complete failure (Polaris machines maybe, Ford = no) Now to replace them is pretty dang simple. Yes the lower ball joint comes out of the lower control arm with a hammer.....WAY too easy. You NEED to smack the ball joint right dead in the middle and have the LCA supported by a jack stand The joint will pop right out. Clean the snot out of the LCA and mounting surfaces, set up your press and press the new joint in straight and evenly. I have a wicked good OTC ball joint press I bought for doing full size trucks that makes this a snap. The upper BJ you replace the whole control arm (UCA) The most important thing to do here is mark the location of the one you took out so you can put the new control arm in the same spot.
