N does exist!!!!!!! it is between 4 hi and 4 low
It is not marked on all of the cases, but if you shift it to that position it will stay in N (both front and rear d shafts spin freeley)

On both the 1354e and 1354m t case (you can put the t case in Neutral)
1354m: Manual shift you simply put the level in N
1354e: Electric shift you remove the t case shift motor and turn the knob by hand
or use the behemouth shifter or the advance adapters hand shifter knob
I think that behemoth peice might be hard to actually get your hands on and its pricey. Better off locating a 1354M t case, its a direct bolt it



To flat tow a ranger I would put my transfer case in N and then manual transmission also in N
I bet your 5 speed bit the dust from the old output shaft spinning while flat towing but not slinging lube........
Flat tow Ranger must remove driveshaft OR put transfer case in N
