I have never looked at the window mechanism so I can't even say what, how, or when, but from the diagram you posted, looking form the closed side of the upright piece, and if there is nothing on the inside, strips could be adhered by flathead screws.
The problem is just how much space is inside and how large you can make the bushing to allow for a larger tracking area with out breaking.
