I had a mid 90's Colt AR that wasn't headspaced correctly and it would split 1 out of 10 cases. It also had a BCG that was not staked. I learned a lot from that Colt.

You don't have to have the go/no-go gauges but they do make it easier. The way to do it without the gauges is detailed over at the 68forms.com
