I have rebuilt a 4406 that broke a chain (98 F250 w/ 100+k and the case had never been serviced). It was locked up and I got lucky with the planetary gears. Like I posted earlier it will get expensive if you need to replace planetary gears. If the planetary gears are OK then bearings, seals, gaskets, chains, and possibly sprockets are the usual culprits. The pump and shift forks are robust parts.
