only the 96-97.5 5.0 computer needs a vss in the tailhousing The 98+ PCM'S (with pats) do not need the tailhousing vss This 98 ranger did not have a vss in the tailhousing It is my 97 5.0 computer that is expecting to see it My donor for this truck was a early 97, no pats and it needs the VSS signal. So the 4406 with vss is what I needed I was lucky to find a good working one locally The 4406e was used until at least 2014, the last year of the 4.6 triton was still using the 4406 t case The ranger t case shift motor bolts up to it like stock This 98 ranger was ESOF 4x4 so we opted to keep it Otherwise I would have installed a manual shift 4406 I have 4ea 4406 t cases in the shop right now, spoiled. In the past I have added the vss to transfer cases that did not have it before.
