that is the beauty of the 4406e, they use similar shift motors Ditch the factory oil cooler You are better off using an external oil cooler of your choice. Oil temp is not really a problem on a 302 in a Ranger IMO The factory cooler is OKAY but Ford did away with it in 98 and you should too When there is a problem they mix water and oil, not something you want happening in your engine I have seen two go bad over the years, once they mix you are screwed!!! Huge mess and problems So you have three choices: 1. keep the 96-97 style oil cooler (boo hiss) 2. Use the 98-01 adapter and lower rad hose (yeah! still uses 820s small filter) 3. Use a canton billet oil filter adapter, hoses and remote filter mount so you can use a Fl1a filter, then you can easily plumb a oil cooler, pressure gauge, even mount the filter where it will get cool air all over it (HOORAY!)
