The more important question is how well you can you stop a load. For a trailer of more than 1000 lbs capacity I would have electronic brakes and a controller.

I pull a lawn mower trailer with my JD riding mower through the wester Carolina mountains. That is about the safe limit with my truck even though it is rated more.
