Chewy, when I originally read your intro I missed you said about a possible vacuum leak. If your Ranger has the 4.0 engine check the torque on the upper intake bolts they have a tendency to leak. My 2000 Ranger had the same problem a couple years back. Here is a link from you tube about a high idle problem.
