Don't wait for a Ranger 8.8 rear axle, most Explorer 8.8 come with Posi and 31 Spline Axles AND disc Brakes, so IF you find one in the JY for a reasonable price, grab it.

The Explorer Axle needs modifying, the Spring Pads need to be either... cut off and reworded to the top of the axle tubes OR there is an adapter kit to use the existing mounts and add on a top mounting point.

Also, the Explorer Axles are a couple inches wider, not a bad thing for a Ranger !

Good Luck on your hunt, to me with what should out there in the JY, you should wait to buy until you find the axle you want... BUT, I for one do not think you will find a STOCK 8.8 with 4.88 gears.
So if you find an Explorer Rear Axle with all the other goodies, i.e. 31 spline axles, disc brakes and posi, buy it ... and buy the gears separately and have them installed before installing axle housing assembly in the truck, also remember you need to replace the front diff gears with 4.88 also, 4x's need the same gears in the rear and front diffs.

Lucky for me. Truck is 2wd. So don't gotta worry bout front diff gearing.
