The only reason I won't be switching to disc. None of the mustangs came with 4.56 or 4.88 gearing. It appears the only gearing that they offered was 3.73 I believe it was when I checked. And the price to regear was quite expensive.
I found a 8.8, 10†Drum, 4.56 geared rear assembly for $840 with 60k miles. So I'll probably do that and stick with drum. Ain't had any problem with them.
That sounds a little high for a rear axle with 60K, can you see and inspect the axle before buying... ?
Spin it, feel for any roughness in the pinion turning with the Ring Gear, and check for a smoothness in the bearings both pinion and wheel bearings.
Open up the rear Cover and take a look at the gears, look for chips, or cracks in the gears or diff housing; if it is a posi, make sure you and a friend can't turn one wheel in a different directional than the other, could indicate something is wrong.
While the case is open, look at the gears, wipe a section down and look for a discoloration in the teeth, like a blue coloring on the gears but only in sections, could indicate over-heating of the gears, maybe to a point of taking the hardness out of the gears or adding too much hardness to them.
Smell the oil, it shouldn't snell burnt, again could indicate higher than normal temperatures in the rear axle.
Find out what the vehicle was used for when the axle was in it, drag racing, or heavy off-loading... may need to rebuild the axle !
So many things can be wrong with a used axle... if the guy says it was just a DD, double check everything.
Don't mean to put a wrench on the works... but just check thing out.
