Just wanted to see what would happen if the wrong key did turn the ignition. Have heard it starts then dies, heard it wouldn't crank, heard it runs but dies when you put it in to gear...

Well here we go from trying it.

I took the ignition lock cylinder out of my explorer after stripping it. Was a 99 but had the transponder keys that did work.

The ranger I tried it on was a February 2000 with a 3.0, 2 working keys.

I put the expo cylinder in the ranger, took the original keys far enough away so they couldn't influence it.

When I put the expo key in even before I turned it the theft light started flashing rapidly. Upon turning the key to the start position nothing happened. No cranking at all. The minute the key was inserted the system knew it was the wrong transponder.

So there you have it. On an early 2000 ranger if something messes with the pats it just will not crank over at all.
