Actually that should have worked both times. I just use a high quality butt connector that has heat shrink on both sides, I crimp it on, a little bit of dielectric grease on the connector to keep the moisture out and shazam it works.

One thing you need to do is cut the wires back about an inch because if you cut them right at the old pigtail you will see the copper is discolored since the corrosion climbs up the wire when the connector goes. The new pigtail has enough wire length to make up for it. If you crimp on a corroded wire you have instant resistance which means instant heat which means early failure. If you try to solder a corroded wire it will not stick.
