A resistance test will tell you what is going on. If the cable has ever been kinked that could cause problems as well. I have one of the Mag-mount Wilson 1000's. I had a broken solder joint in the base. I cut it open with a dremel and used epoxy to seal it back up. While you have it open you can also shorten your coax to the correct length.
