If I was building from scratch I would consider a skeletalized slide. The weight difference would make an exercise in finding the right springs for it. As far as the decreased reliability any change from stock will require the proper tuning to get it up to where it needs to be. Most of the factory pistols I have had required some tuning to get them were they needed to be. For example, Glocks are super dependable but have horrible gritty triggers that either need a light polish job or 40k rounds run through it to get it smooth.

Your fist concern about the perception of a court's view if you had to use a customized gun in a defense situation depends on where you live. If you live in Texas, Georgia, Florida, or any other gun friendly state it is not an issue. If you live in a gun un-friendly state like New Jersey or Massachusetts you will probably have a problem.
