My 98 Ranger 2.5 regular cab needs a new rack and pinion. It's leaking where the steering shaft joins the rack. Plus it's getting a little loose but not bad. It's the original unit with 385,000 miles on it. It's a beat up old truck but still my daily driver. I don't want to pay $300-$400 for a Motorcraft rack and the engine goes out in a few months. I can either order from Rockauto or go to Summit since it's local to me. The parts stores are not even an option. The core is killer. It's like $100-$150. There are several claimed rack and pinion rebuilders on Ebay that offer the racks for right around $100 no core charge. I've emailed a couple and asked do they have the one for the regular cab. They respond saying they are all the same although all the top brands have two different options depending on cab. So that threw me off right there. I've actually had pretty good luck with the parts I've bought on Ebay. Nothing crazy has happened. The descriptions of the Ebay rack rebuilders are kinda vague. They call them remanufactured but don't specify what is replaced. Anyone ever tried one from Ebay?
