No, there were some levels of rangers that had a 31 spline torsen style rear end. I was originally going to put the expo rear end (it was a 4.10 LS) but the torsen is a better rear end AND it bolts right in a ranger, an explorer rear end you have to weld spring perches and shock mounts on top since an explorer rear is over the springs and the ranger is under.

Side to side there is very little difference, I don't remember exactly but I think it is about 3/4" total. At 3/8 a side most humans wouldn't notice.
