A HP also has a couple of gotcha's when field stripping as some of the parts can be installed upside down, clocked correctly (trigger pin), or backwards (recoil spring guide) causing all kinds of grief. On my HP I purchased it from a retiring deputy sheriff who had carried it for a little over 20 years. My dad showed me how to do a full cleaning taking everything apart and cleaning it. We also stripped the finish and re-blued it as it had a lot of holster wear. When we put it back together the magazine disconnect  was left out and a new spring kit was installed. We also painted the trigger assy with a black magic marker so that we could see the rub areas after a few hundred rounds.

I ran 200 rounds through it and stripped it down to remove the trigger assy. The wear areas on the trigger were polished and alcohol was used to remove what was left of the magic marker and polish the sear and hammer engagement points. I had been walked through a full strip and and I had taken it to the getting the trigger out and back. What I had done had lightened up the trigger and made it smooth but it was still about 6 pounds.

I was at the point of changing to a lighter trigger return spring. Dad had stopped supervising at that point. I tore into and installed a lighter trigger return spring and put the recoil spring guide in backwards. I was unable to rack a round into the chamber or rack it back far enough to get to the take down point. Dad destroyed the guide getting it apart. Lesson learned.

I eventually got it to where I was happy with it. It ran better with hotter loads (also a mistake, cracked frame and broken slide rails after 50k rounds). I had problems with HP ammo and dad did a throat job on it changing the angle of the ramp. It would eat anything after that.
