ArcticWolf, 30-06 has bagged many a deer. The Garand is a heavy rifle to be used for hunting. It will do the job. I would recommend a Remington 700/78 or a Ruger American/Scout/No.1 series as a better alternative as they are almost half the weight and more accurate. My primary deer rifle is a Remington 78 30-06 with a Simmons TV view 4-12x44 that is .6 MOA at 100 yards. It has been a 1 shot 1 kill gun since the early 80's. I also have a Remington 7600 pump .270 that I have turned into a scout rifle. I have both 10 and 20 round magazines for a sub MOA gun that can easily reach out to 900 yards. I am running a 4-12x50 Leopold with peep sights on it. It is nice to have choices.
