We have those steady springs on the MGBs too - easiest way to fit is to put the cap on the spring, place it over the hole in the shoe and compress it with a pair of pliers gripping the edge of the cap - then insert the pin from behind and rotate the pin 90 degrees.

I have a tool for doing this but it often isn't worth the trip to the box since the pliers are already out.
