Will Synchronizers do it, just maybe she forced the truck into first gear, damaging the Synchronizer, which in turn doesn't allow smooth shifts into first.

If she attempted to down shift into first to slow the truck down, MAYBE !

Thinking out loud here !

Can you get the trans to shift into first if you rev up the engine ?
