Diesel guys use a ping pong ball and put it on the oil fill cap, it should dance around a bit but not be blown off
This is a blowby test for a 7.3 diesel...would be interesting to see what happens on your 4 banger

Best way to know the health of your engine is analysis of the oil as Jamman pointed out, short of that you can read the plugs and watch your fluids
