Next time keep the trans and just covert that one like you said . Yes it's has to be torn down . But the hassle of a mystery trans and converter is likely way more costly specially if it has to get yanked back out . What I did when I was rockin the 4r70 . It's really only rear output shaft and a tail housing which you could probably source the parts to cut down on the shop cost on the bench build since you would probably just drop off the trans by it's self .
