I got my schuster in and after getting the right tools I swapped out the factory plug for it. The schuster I bought does NOT allow for the bayonet lug to enter it. That's a bummer, but I only bought the bayonet for show, anyway. I might find a way to open up the schuster to allow for the bayonet but that's not a priority.

The factory setting on the plug was way too weak to even begin to cycle the action. I wound up cranking it back quite a bit before it would function reliably. I would stick in an empty clip plus one round and I kept cranking the gas pressure up until it would reliably shove the bolt to the rear, lock, and eject the clip. Once I found that, I gave it a half-turn more and called it good.

While shooting, I learned if you don't have it tight into the meat of your shoulder, it REALLY hurts. When shooting ARs, I had developed the habit of getting the stock less in my shoulder and more towards the chest. Fine for 5.56, bad idea with 30-06.

Didn't take long to get it sighted in for me, although I did find the elevation knob was REALLY loose. It didn't click, just rotated like it was on a bearing. I need to figure out how to tighten that up, maybe dab a little blue threadlocker on the threads.

I did find that the clips like to hit me in the face (of course, why wouldn't they?) and oddly enough, the brass will often lands forward and right of me. I had a pile of brass at either the 5 or 3 yard line. Indoor range. That I found very strange.

Other than that, this is the malfunction I find happens. This happened twice. Both times it was the second round remaining in the clip. Was not the same clip used. Was easy enough to fix, but something I found out quickly.

I will say this, that M1 sure makes my AR15s feel like toys.


Possible that the spring is getting worn or has in poor terminology [due to lack of experience with a "clip vs a magazine"] a flat spot or memory in it? Im not sure that i'd call that a stove piping type issue or a bad feed but it would seem that when you get down to those last two rounds, maybe its the clips themselves are worn and need to be replaced if you can get those two clips to fail the same again or over and over unlike the other ones.
