The online MS Office product that is leased is called subscription service, and it is lower cost for the company, increasing profits, plus it keeps the revenue stream steady and happier. Of course there are other reasons for it, mobile computing being the main reason.
My son was a product manager at MS and just recently moved to a new company. He admitted many of the top level programmers used Macs for writing code as physically they are nicer to use. His new company has few Macs in use. The whole Mac vs. PC may be psychosomatic for many.

I think to the amount of profit made too.. Adobe CS6 used to be  $1300 on a $ .69 disc (or two).. People like my son pay $50 and some change for a "subscription service".

The difference:

$1300 - You had a tangible product in hand.

$50 x 3.4 Years of use = $2000 and change

My son uses the Adobe Suite, hes been using it for the 3.4 years and for what he does has no intentions of NOT using it at this point.  So 12 years out? ($7200 !) Creative Adobe Suite Or Creative Accounting and co-dependency of commodities?

Long term wise, profitability is on the rise and like many things in this life/world YOU  own nothing. The subscription can be terminated, you have to  constantly be on the hook for it.

Not to bring it into every topic but the reality is It's just like anything applied in the government sector... Co-dependency is a real thing. Imagine for just a moment if everyone decided to give up their mobile phones or cable/SAT Tell-a-vision. What a change on the world that be on every level: financially, businesses models collapsing, revenue flops, it would be a traumatic effect on any and all involved.

Follow the money trail line of thinking and do the math.. you know what I'm talking about. lol
