I was given a low end rack grade M1 by my uncle back in '79 when I was a senior in high school. I shot modern 30-06 loads in it because I didn't know better. I used it as a target gun, plinking and hunting. Between that and the previous use and abuse I have learned what not to do with a Garand and how to fix them or limp them along. I have replaced my OP rod and all the springs more than once. I stopped shooting it about 18 years ago because it had about a 12" MOA. I paid the $50 evaluation fee at CMP and they wanted to replace everything to the tune of just over $700 at that time or they would give me $200 off a Garand that they had in stock. I didn't have the extra $$ and it has sat in my safe since then. It was a fun gun to shoot and the sound the clip makes on the 8th round is magical.
