Checked the oil for the first time on the road trip.  I am 1917 miles in and the truck hasnt used any oil.  Pretty impressed considering it's lugging an extra 500lbs of junk and doing 75+ the whole time.

Why in gods name does the stupid ac compressor on these trucks run in any heater setting?

It runs on more of the vent settings than not :(  5 of the vent settings automatically enable AC - totally unnecessary and unwanted.
Very simple to do, just find the purple wire from the back of the vent control in the HVAC panel, break it and wire in a switch

I think "face only" doesn't activate the compressor.

The A/C runs to dehumidify the air and not in all positions, mostly  going to the defroster to keep the windshield clear.

The temperature of the air is regulated by the Temperature Control but the compressor still runs.

There is a "How-To" in Ranger-Forums.com to install a button to control the A/C in the circuit, might be a good one to try out your Navy Electronics Education on, Dustin !

Added and Correction:

I can not find the How-To I was talking about.
I PM'd the guy I thought wrote it and requested his opinion on shutting off the A/C at anytime is would normally come on.
This guy is a wealth of knowledge on Ford so I am hoping if he didn't write one and doesn't know of one... he will know the best route to the to install a switch to shut off the A/C when you don't want it !
I kind of want this too but I thought it was a How-To already written !

When and IF something turns up I will post.
