I was on a Small Arms Competition team when I was in the AF. It exposed me to some of the small arms not typically seen by most in the AF. The weapons we used on the team were fitted with match grade barrels and we had an armorer who showed how to optimize the weapons. The M-14 .308 shot well but my model 78 30-06 was a lot more accurate reaching out to 1000 yards. The few times I shot the .338 and .50BMG they were crazy accurate but they also had the optics that could see out that far. I had one of the Dutch licensed Armalight AR-10's and tried to tune it to be a consistent 1000 yard gun but the best I got was about 14" spread. It was frustrating as the previous owner of the gun could shoot a 4" spread with the same gun and his ammo - I ended up selling it back to him when I mentioned I was thinking about selling it. He had had seller's remorse. The "Reach Out" calibers can be fun but they can also be frustrating. The furthest I shoot now is about 200 yards with my 6.8SPC. I still use my 30-06 for deer hunting but that has been my deer rifle for 30 years (most of those kills were 70 yards and less).
