You will not accurately reach out to 1000 yards with any 223/5.56 or 7.62x39 rifle with any effect. A 7.62x39 has very little energy past 300 yards. A 5.56 can ring a gong at 600 yards but it has spent all of it's energy. You need 7mm Mag, .308, 30-06, .338 Laupa or 50 Cal or a few others to reach out.

For 100 to 300 yards 223 will work but 300 yards that is about it for a drop shot. For up to 500 yards a 6.8SPC works, for up to 1000 yards a .308 works, for 1500 yards 338 laupa works for a shot that will drop a target. As you go up it gets a lot more expensive to shoot.

A 50 BMG is a whole different story.

I 100% agree. Sorry, I wasn't meaning I wanted to reach out 1000 yards with a .223/5.56. Though I have seen several youtube vids of people doing it repeatedly. I have a cheap Remington 783 in .30-06. I put a little better scope on it than the stock Bushnell and that's what I've shot steel at 500 yards with. I don't reload (yet) but Federal and Remington ammo in a 180gr seem to work best for distance. The 165gr does well too but the 150gr seems to be all over the place. The only range in my area is rather raggedy and only has a single 500 yard target, nothing beyond that.

I'd like to build a nice Remington 700 in .308 or even a nice .338 Laupa. Any of the .338 combos I can find are rather pricey, more than I can justify as just an enthusiast.
