You will not accurately reach out to 1000 yards with any 223/5.56 or 7.62x39 rifle with any effect. A 7.62x39 has very little energy past 300 yards. A 5.56 can ring a gong at 600 yards but it has spent all of it's energy. You need 7mm Mag, .308, 30-06, .338 Laupa or 50 Cal or a few others to reach out.

For 100 to 300 yards 223 will work but 300 yards that is about it for a drop shot. For up to 500 yards a 6.8SPC works, for up to 1000 yards a .308 works, for 1500 yards 338 laupa works for a shot that will drop a target. As you go up it gets a lot more expensive to shoot.

A 50 BMG is a whole different story.
