The early Mini-14's came with a 10:1 refiling twist. It would shoot light bullets reasonably well but they had trouble stabilizing heavier bullets. I have an after-market bull barrel on one of the early models and it is a tack driver. Do not buy one unless it has an 8:1 or 7:1 barrel on it. I have also had an early Mini-30. The barrel was .308 and most of the ammo for it was .311". They were prone to wearing out the rifling if you shot a lot, Ruger changed the bore to .311 some time in the 90's. The Mini-30 also did not like the steel cased commie block ammo and would have feeding issues. The receiver is a proven design. There are some year models to stay away from and others that are fantastic guns. I am not a fan of 7.62x39 in anything but commie bloc guns.
