I had an interesting failure in my AR9 pistol this afternoon. I had a 9x18 Mac shell casing slip by my QA when reloading. It got sized and loaded as a 9x19 Lugar round. The AR9 has a tight enough tolerance it would not go into battery when the Mac round hit the receiver. The ejector paw did not have a good grab on it and it bounced around inside the receiver. it lodged in a recess in the top of the receiver jamming the bolt for both forward and rearward travel. I was able to get it out when I disassembled it at home but during my fight with it at the range I cracked the tang on my bolt carrier handle. I can pick one of those up for about $15 but I see the upper receiver has too much open space in the top of the receiver that can allow for this type of jam. I purchased my upper as a pre-assembled upper as it was about $90 cheaper than what I could put together. It came with a forward assist and dust cover - both are not needed with this bolt configuration. I am thinking about getting an upper receiver that does not have the FA or dust cover and swap everything over after I fill in the void inside the receiver to prevent possible jams like I had today.
